My Entrepreneurial Story • Bojana Mikarić
The story of Bojana MIKARIĆ is a story of love, kindness, and dedication—you can feel it the moment you meet her. Her handshake and embrace radiate countless positive messages.
She is the founder and director of the preschool institution and foreign language school VRABAC in Kragujevac.
By profession, she is a graduate professor of English language and literature, a Montessori pedagogy educator, and currently pursuing a master’s degree in educational leadership.
For twelve years, she has been carefully shaping her story through Vrabac and her little Vrapčići (little sparrows).
In conversation, she emphasizes that her calling is one of the most responsible and, at the same time, most beautiful in the world. Children are sincere, open, and selfless, and the love and energy they give her bring daily joy.
I met Bojana when she was starting her entrepreneurial journey, and the passion I saw in her then is still alive today. She nurtures the same enthusiasm, creativity, and positive outlook.
Read on to discover her perspective on the key aspects of business and leadership.
What inspired you to step into the world of entrepreneurship?
The idea to start my own language school, and later a preschool, came to me while working in an elementary school.
I felt that much more could be achieved in working with children, and I saw myself in a more open system of learning and education.
Our educational system evolves slowly and with uncertainty, and it is up to us—individuals and enthusiasts—to make fundamental and confident changes.
What are the key ingredients for achieving success in your field?
Belief in a better tomorrow and change. A strong team of people who support each other both professionally and personally.
Success is a relative concept when working with children and parents.
Grades are not a measure of success, nor is money. The results of what we do in our preschool and language school become visible only years later when children grow up and become independent in many ways.
How important are people in your entrepreneurial journey?
The story of Vrabac is, in fact, a story about both little and big people.
So, people come first—without them, Vrabac would not be what it is today.
From your experience, what are the key factors in effectively developing and leading people?
Through countless interactions in my professional environment, I have learned that development and leadership cannot exist without:
- Respect and appreciation
- Understanding individuals
- Care and love for everyone on the team
What has also proven important is that everyone needs a sense of security and support in their workplace.
What role does communication play in driving your business success?
Communication is crucial in all aspects of our work—starting with open communication within the team. This mindset has helped us many times resolve uncomfortable situations and improve our skills in communicating with children, parents, and families.
When we welcome a new educator, we always strive to guide them in understanding our approach and internal communication.
Communication with children is extremely important, and we regularly discuss our observations at team meetings to enhance our interactions and relationships with them.
We also pay close attention to how we communicate with parents—ensuring it is balanced and sufficient. The current trend of Viber parent groups can be a slippery slope, creating significant pressure for both parents and educators.
What valuable lessons have the challenges in your career taught you?
We live and work in times of frequent, sudden, and inevitable changes, and with that come numerous challenges.
Lifelong learning is the path my team and I follow. Adapting to change is certainly another key lesson, along with maintaining an open heart and mind, and having plenty of patience.
Here, I would highlight one of the most valuable tools in Montessori pedagogy—observation. It is the foundation of every science.
Every Montessori teacher and educator training places special emphasis on observation.
Believe me, it is a real challenge to simply observe children without interfering in what they are doing, even when we know that with our help, they could complete a task more quickly.
This has taught me patience—not just in working with children but also with adults.
We all need opportunities to learn from our own mistakes, through personal experience.
What are the three key strategies for successfully running your own business?
After twelve years of business leadership, I believe the three key things are:
- Dedicate yourself fully to what you do.
- Develop and nurture good communication—both internally and externally.
- Accept change and adapt to it appropriately.
